Mercedes to keep A‑Class hatchback in 2028 redesign with hybrid and EV options

Autocar reports Mercedes will introduce a fifth-generation A‑Class in 2028, offering hybrid and fully electric powertrains and built on the CLA platform. The model will retain hatchback styling but adopt a raised driving position to offset the higher floor of the EV variant; Mercedes extended the current A‑Class beyond a planned 2025 end because EV demand has been slower than expected.

Sources describe the design as “traditional in form but modern in detailing,” approved before design chief Gorden Wagener’s departure. Mercedes plans increased ground clearance across the line and may add subtle wheel-arch cladding to reduce visual rear wheel-well gaps; the company says the A‑Class will not become a crossover, and aims to improve access and outward visibility to appeal to both younger buyers and former B‑Class customers.
