Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer said legislation that effectively outlaws the sale of new combustion cars from 2035 “really needs to be looked at”, arguing carmakers need more time to meet government EV registration targets.
Current laws require 100% of new cars sold in the UK and 90% in the EU to be fully electric from January 2035, while EVs accounted for about 22% of UK registrations and 20% in Europe so far this year. Schäfer, who leads Volkswagen, said those targets are unrealistic given current EV uptake.
