U.S. Car Thefts Fall Nearly 25% in 2025; Elantra Tops Stolen Models

U.S. car thefts fell nearly 25% in 2025 to 659,880 incidents, the National Insurance Crime Bureau said, crediting automakers, law enforcement and insurers for a "historic decline."

The drop in car thefts was broad-based, with the biggest reductions in Washington and Colorado while California — led by Los Angeles — still recorded about 137,000 thefts; the Hyundai Elantra was the most stolen model, followed by the Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata, and the NICB recommends alarms, tracking devices and other deterrents as thieves grow more software-savvy.
