Jeep’s XJ Pioneer Concept Updates a 1984 Cherokee with Subtle, Practical Upgrades

Jeep unveiled the XJ Pioneer Concept at the Easter Jeep Safari, a lightly modified 1984 Cherokee XJ that retains its factory 2.8-liter V6, automatic transmission and 4.10 rear axle while gaining a two-inch lift and 33-inch tires.

Jeep found the donor with about 80,000 miles and applied an OEM+ approach, reworking wheel openings for the larger tires and adding integrated rock rails and an Apple Macintosh Plus–inspired cooler.

The team avoided major powertrain swaps and kept the vehicle's height down to preserve stability, prioritizing usable, subtle upgrades over dramatic conversions. The XJ Pioneer Concept emphasizes the Cherokee's original strengths and provides a tasteful blueprint for enthusiasts seeking practical off-road modifications.
