Toyota Confirms Celica Sport with AWD and a Hybrid 2.0 Turbo Under Development

Toyota confirmed it is developing a new Celica called the Celica Sport that will use all-wheel drive and is expected to employ a hybrid turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, Gazoo Racing marketing manager Mikio Hayashi told Autocar.

Mikio Hayashi told Autocar the new model will be called the Celica Sport and confirmed an all-wheel-drive layout, linking the nameplate to its rallying heritage.

A camouflaged compact coupe prototype was photographed testing in Portugal in February, and those test photos and reports suggest Toyota may position the Celica Sport as its next World Rally Championship contender. Hayashi said the 2.0-liter engine (codenamed G20E) is in development and appeared in the GR Yaris M concept, but he declined to confirm final displacement, hybrid type, or a launch timeline.
