Toyota’s Rumored Celica Sport May Get Mid‑Mounted 2.0l Turbo Hybrid

Reports say Toyota's upcoming rally-inspired all-wheel-drive coupe, reportedly called the Celica Sport, will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid and may be mid-mounted.

Gazoo Racing marketing manager Mikio Hayashi told Autocar that emissions rules likely rule out the 1.6-liter three-cylinder, prompting consideration of a 2.0-liter and no decision on standard or plug-in hybrid; Hayashi said engineers are making steady progress but gave no timeline.

Toyota has tested the G20E motor in a mid-engined Yaris M prototype since last year, and CarExpert says a manual gearbox is possible for the Celica Sport, though that remains speculative; Toyota was also seen testing a coupe-bodied 2027 World Rally Championship prototype in Portugal, which Toyota has not confirmed. Auto Motor und Sport suggests the G20E could exceed 600 hp with a large turbo versus about 450 hp in standard form, and Autocar notes the engine's shorter piston stroke makes it smaller and lighter for easier hybrid integration.
