Colorado State Patrol Stops 2,540 Drivers for Left-Lane Slow Travel; I‑70 Is a Hotspot

The Colorado State Patrol said troopers stopped 2,540 drivers this month for "traveling slower than the flow of traffic" in the left lane.

The agency reported 962 of those stops occurred on Interstate 70 and said Friday afternoons were the most common time for enforcement. Colonel Matthew Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, warned the left lane is not intended for permanent travel on roads 65 mph or greater and said obstructing traffic is unsafe and illegal.

Louisiana passed a law imposing fines of $150 for a first offense, $250 for a second, and $350 plus up to 30 days in jail for a third offense, and removed the 10 mph threshold for enforcement.

Other states have pursued similar bills; an Idaho proposal for a $75 fine passed the state Senate but failed in the Idaho House.
