Driver Shares Viral DIY Taillight Fix After Pep Boys Quoted $293

Content creator @b.fly126 posted a video showing she replaced a broken taillight herself after Pep Boys quoted $293 to order and install the part.

In the clip, which has more than 203,000 views, @b.fly126 says a Pep Boys employee told her the shop would need to remove the bumper and spend about an hour and a half, so she checked YouTube and completed the swap with improvised tools. She called the $293 quote "predatory" and tagged Pep Boys in the post.

The episode fits broader patterns: a TOPDON and Statista survey found 93% of diagnostic-tool users avoided technician visits, and Nathan Shipley, automotive industry analyst for Circana, said more out-of-warranty vehicles are prompting owner maintenance. Experts note taillight parts vary widely in price, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration flags broken taillights as a safety hazard, and some insurance policies may require professional replacement.
