Hamilton Says He Broke F1 Dress Rules and Sparked the Paddock Catwalk

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion now in his second year with the Ferrari team, told Esquire he broke paddock dress rules and helped normalize personal fashion in Formula 1.

Hamilton said teams previously required drivers to wear sponsor-laden team kits and follow strict expectations; he told Esquire, "I'd arrive and feel terrible wearing the same thing 180 days a year."

Hamilton said he began showing up in his own clothes without permission and that the attention and positive press led teams, including his Ferrari team, to allow it, creating the "paddock catwalk" trend followed by drivers including Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

Hamilton said fashion helped him express identity after an upbringing where style was not discussed and that music heavily influenced his taste.
