NASA’s Artemis II to Launch Orion on First Crewed Lunar Flyby Since 1972

NASA's Artemis II is scheduled to launch tonight in a window beginning at 6:24 p.m. Eastern, carrying four astronauts on a crewed lunar flyby—the first human mission to travel near the Moon since 1972.

The Orion spacecraft will carry four crew, including the first woman to fly a lunar flyby, and is designed for reuse with modern onboard systems. Artemis II's trajectory is planned to reach roughly 250,000 to 252,800 miles from Earth, surpassing the Apollo 13 distance record of 248,655 miles.

The Space Launch System generates about 8.8 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, nearly one million more than the Saturn V, and serves as NASA's launch vehicle for Artemis II. NASA is providing live feeds of the countdown and launch.
