Audi’s 2.5l Inline-Five to Leave Europe by 2027, Report Says It May Continue Elsewhere

Audi will end production of its turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five in Europe by mid-2027 because it cannot meet Euro 7 emissions rules, while a Motor1 report says the engine will continue in markets outside Europe.

The EA855 five-cylinder powers the RS 3 sedan in the United States, the RS 3 hatchback overseas, and previously appeared in the TT RS and the Europe-only RS Q3, continuing a 50-year Audi inline-five lineage.

Audi global CEO Gernot Dollner told Australian outlet Drive in September that the inline-five would "probably" end with Euro 7. Automotive News reported an Audi spokesperson confirmed the engine will be axed in Europe because it fails to comply, with RS 3 production at the Gyor plant ending by mid-2027.

Automotive News said Audi cited the cost of hardware changes and its shift toward electric vehicles as reasons to drop the engine in Europe, and Motor1's coverage suggests Audi will continue the inline-five in non-European markets.
