Mercedes‑Benz to Invest $4 Billion in Tuscaloosa Plant to Build Next‑Generation GLC

Mercedes-Benz will invest $4 billion in its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant to expand capacity and add the next‑generation GLC, with production targeted to begin in 2029, Chairman and Mercedes‑Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius said.

The company marked the 5 millionth vehicle to roll off the Tuscaloosa line—a 2027 GLE—while unveiling the 2027 GLE and 2027 GLS at a plant event attended by Källenius, and the plant currently builds the GLE and GLS and can also make the EQE and EQS EV utilities.

Källenius told MotorTrend that early GLC prototypes should start running in 2028 and that initial GLC output from Tuscaloosa will be allocated to the U.S., with exports possible later; about 60 percent of current Alabama production is exported.

Michael Schiebe, Member of the Board of Management for Production, Quality, and Supply Chain Management, said the plant has room to expand without acquiring more land and that Mercedes‑Benz will expand its local supplier base while working with existing suppliers.
