Geely Backs UK Launch with Massive Chinese EV Factories, Automation and £200m R&d Hub

Geely launched in the UK at the end of 2025 and is supporting its mass-market BEV and PHEV push with vast Chinese manufacturing capacity, heavy automation and a new £200m-plus R&D and safety complex.

In China the Linhai plant has a 300,000-car annual output dedicated to the Starray EM-i and displays extensive automation. Geely sells more than 50,000 EX2s (badged locally as the Xingyuan) per month in China and recorded 4.1 million global vehicle sales last year.

Geely aims to sell 100,000 cars per year in the UK by 2030 following its late-2025 launch with a two-pronged BEV and PHEV strategy. Michael Yang, Geely Auto UK's boss, said the company could build vehicles locally if demand, conditions and finances align, and Geely has also mooted building cars in a Volvo US plant to bypass import tariffs.

The company has invested more than £200 million in a new safety centre and wind-tunnel complex that houses three tunnels in the same building, including one capable of 155mph gusts with -40°C to +60°C temperature and sun and rain simulation.
