PHEV SUV Boom: MG HS and Chery Tiggo 9 Undercut European Rivals in UK

The UK plug-in hybrid (PHEV) market grew 35% in 2025 and almost 50% in January 2026, prompting a review of five new PHEV SUVs including the MG HS and Chery Tiggo 9.

The five shortlisted SUVs — Mercedes‑Benz GLC 300 4Matic, Skoda Kodiaq iV, Cupra Formentor eHybrid, Chery Tiggo 9 and MG HS Plug‑in Hybrid — were assessed only if they offer about 70 WLTP electric miles or more, qualifying for a low benefit‑in‑kind tax band.

The MG HS claims roughly 75 electric miles and starts from about £32,000, undercutting comparable European models, while the Chery Tiggo 9 is larger and pitched at competitive pricing for bigger families.

If PHEV sales continue to outpace EV and HEV growth, the MG HS and other Chinese brands could drive wider PHEV adoption in the UK this year, presenting a nearer-term challenger to pure‑petrol options.
