Hendrick Motorsports: Justin Allgaier Says Juggling No. 48 Cup Duties and JR Motorsports Success Is Straining Cup Results

Justin Allgaier, Hendrick Motorsports' fill-in driver for the No. 48 Cup car and an O’Reilly Series driver for JR Motorsports, said juggling both roles has produced strong Xfinity finishes but hurt his Cup outcomes.

He told Motorsport.com at Rockingham he feels “like I’m failing at all of it” because owner points put him late in Xfinity qualifying—when the track is fastest—but early in Cup qualifying, costing grid position and pit selection. Allgaier noted how tight NextGen Cup lap times magnify small gaps.

Allgaier said he holds six or seven weekly meetings, frequently travels between Concord and Mooresville, and is working with crew chief Blake Harris and the No. 48 engineers while supporting the No. 7 squad.

He will drive the No. 48 at Bristol this weekend and said Alex Bowman, the No. 48 regular recovering from vertigo, is working toward a return he hopes will be a “Cinderella story.”
