Volkswagen 2.5l Turbo VR6 Powers China Atlas (Teramont); HPA Motorsports Buys Remaining Engines

Volkswagen produced a China-specific 2.5-liter turbocharged VR6 for the Atlas badged as Teramont and Teramont X that delivers 295 hp and 369 lb-ft, and Volkswagen ended VR6 production in 2024 with British Columbia tuner HPA Motorsports acquiring a supply of the engines.

Volkswagen reduced the VR6 displacement to 2,492 cc with an 81 mm bore and 80.6 mm stroke so the engine fell under China’s lower excise-tax threshold, then added a turbocharger; peak power arrives at 6,000 rpm and peak torque spans 2,750–3,500 rpm.

The China-spec VR6 was paired with Volkswagen’s DQ500 seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive; the U.S. Atlas instead offered a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter VR6 rated at 276 hp with an Aisin eight-speed automatic.

After production ceased, HPA Motorsports purchased both earlier DDKA and later DPKA 2.5-liter turbo VR6 units from Volkswagen and is applying them in its HPA VR550T program.
