Porsche Patent Reveals Color-Changing Exterior Film for Hidden Racing Stripes and EV Charge Display

Porsche has filed a patent with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office for an exterior film material, described as electronic paper or a paramagnetic coating, that changes color or becomes invisible when an electric voltage is applied.

Porsche's filing illustrates uses including disappearing racing stripes and color changes tied to drive modes, for example green for eco and red for sport, or removal at the click of a button.

The patent images show stripes behind the rear wheels and on the rear diffuser, and the description notes the film could display an electric vehicle's charge status on the exterior.

The concept builds on existing electrochromic and E Ink demonstrations, such as BMW's i Vision Dee, by applying color-changing material to exterior trim rather than glass.
