NASA Artemis II Flyby Spotlights Three Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicles Left on Moon

NASA's Artemis II mission sent four astronauts on the first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years, and three Apollo-era Lunar Roving Vehicles remain on the lunar surface.

The three Lunar Roving Vehicles were carried on Apollo 15, Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 and are located at Hadley Rille, the Descartes Highlands and the Taurus–Littrow Valley respectively.

Each Lunar Roving Vehicle used four 1/4-horsepower wheel motors totaling about one horsepower, had a rated top speed of about 8 mph and a battery range near 57 miles; Gene Cernan, Apollo 17 astronaut, reached about 11 mph in one rover.

The Apollo 17 rover received a minor fender repair using tape and lunar maps; the three rovers have remained at their Apollo landing sites since the early 1970s.
