Toyota Joins Cellcentric to Push Fuel-Cell Heavy Trucks

Toyota will become a third equal partner in Cellcentric, the fuel-cell systems company founded by Daimler and Volvo, according to a Daimler press release.

Cellcentric says it has developed a NextGen fuel cell offering continuous output of 500 horsepower and has moved its commercial timeline from an initial 2025 target to 2050 on its website.

Toyota continues production of the Mirai and has prior fuel-cell experience from that passenger car program. Daimler's release formalizes Toyota's role as an equal partner in Cellcentric.

Hydrogen supply and refueling infrastructure remain sparse—about 54 stations, mostly in California—and that shortage is a major barrier to scaling fuel-cell heavy trucks even if Cellcentric’s systems prove more efficient than diesel.
