Hyundai Hybrid Owner on TikTok Says Skipped Oil Changes, Now Facing Engine Sludge and Failing Battery

TikTok user @eternalexistentialcrisis says she bought a Hyundai hybrid through Enterprise, was told hybrids need oil changes only once a year, and now reports engine and battery problems after missing service.

She says an oil warning light prompted a visit to Valvoline, where staff told her the oil had turned to sludge and declined to change it, directing her to the dealership; she also says the dealership was closed for several days and later told her the hybrid battery was failing and draining the 12‑volt battery.

The creator says she still owes $16,000 on the vehicle. Take5 notes most hybrids still need oil changes every 5,000–7,000 miles, Toyota recommends two to three times per year for some hybrids, and Nissan warns short trips and sitting can accelerate oil wear.

Because hybrid engines run intermittently, oil-change intervals can be longer than older cars but not as infrequent as once a year across the board; owners should follow the Hyundai maintenance schedule and track mileage.
