Consumer Reports: Seven Car Insurers Top Claims Handling While Prices Score Poorly

Consumer Reports surveyed more than 40,000 U.S. car-insurance policyholders and found seven of 31 insurers earned the highest ratings for claims handling, while no company scored above 3 out of 5 for premium satisfaction.

Martin Lachter, research program leader for Consumer Reports, said consumers tend to shop on premiums but should consider claims performance because that is the main benefit they are paying for, and he recommended weighing claims settlements alongside price.

The survey found five of the seven top claims-handling insurers scored only 2 out of 5 for price, highlighting a trade-off between service and cost in the results.

Farm Bureau Property & Casualty Insurance Company received the lowest overall score at 57 out of 100 yet achieved a perfect score for claims satisfaction, and Consumer Reports cautioned that some high-scoring companies may be regional and not available in every market.
