ILSAC GF-7 Oil Standard Tightens Tests to Curb LSPI and Boost Fuel Economy

The International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee adopted the GF-7 motor oil standard, a stricter replacement for GF-6 intended to reduce low-speed pre-ignition, piston deposits and chain wear while improving fuel economy.

Jason Fenske, host of Engineering Explained, outlines in a video that GF-7 raises testing requirements including used-oil additive durability and specific safeguards against LSPI. ILSAC's new standard also increases the expected fuel-economy improvement over a baseline oil from 3.8% to 4.3%.

GF-7 is described as a floor rather than a ceiling, so oils that already met the tougher criteria did not require reformulation, and ILSAC says the requirements should reduce wear and deposits that can harm engines though gains for individual drivers will be modest.
