Williams F1: Jacques Villeneuve and Damon Hill Revisit 1996 Title Fight

Jacques Villeneuve, the 1995 IndyCar Series champion and 1995 Indianapolis 500 winner, and Damon Hill, his Williams team-mate, discussed their intense 1996 Formula 1 title fight on the Williams Team Torque podcast, with Villeneuve saying Hill exposed how much he still had to learn.

Villeneuve recalled taking pole on his F1 debut but said Hill was a clear benchmark, often being around a second quicker in qualifying after Melbourne. Damon Hill acknowledged Villeneuve’s debut pole and said he was content to concede that result if he won the race.

Damon Hill secured the 1996 drivers’ championship and Jacques Villeneuve finished runner-up in his rookie season ahead of Michael Schumacher. Villeneuve then partnered Heinz-Harald Frentzen at Williams in 1997 and won the 1997 drivers’ championship.
