Adrian Newey to Step Down as Aston Martin Team Principal; Jonathan Wheatley Reported as Successor

Adrian Newey is stepping down as Aston Martin Formula 1 team principal after four months, Motorsport reports, with Audi team principal Jonathan Wheatley reported as his likely replacement.

Newey is reportedly not leaving Aston Martin and will return to focus exclusively on technical matters. Jonathan Wheatley joined Audi at the start of the 2026 season and previously served as sporting director at Red Bull, and Motorsport says the timing will hinge on his Audi contract.

Aston Martin and engine partner Honda have struggled with engine vibrations that forced retirements for drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, with Alonso saying after the Chinese Grand Prix he began to lose feeling in his hands and feet before retiring.

If Wheatley moves to Aston Martin, Audi will need a new team leader; Mattia Binotto is currently CEO of Audi’s Formula 1 team, and it is unclear who would replace Wheatley.
