Alonso Delays Suzuka Arrival After Birth; Aston Martin Rookie Runs FP1, Qualifies 21st

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin driver, delayed his arrival at the Japanese Grand Prix after the birth of his first child, missing Thursday media and briefings while rookie Jak Crawford ran his car in FP1 before Alonso took part in FP2.

Alonso qualified 21st on Saturday, ahead of Aston Martin teammate Lance Stroll, and told Road & Track he felt better after resting on the flight and becoming a father.

Alonso said the AMR26 delivered reliable laps allowing him to catch up, but he acknowledged Aston Martin remain uncompetitive and that factory teams are working on improvements that will take months.
