Toyota is developing the returning Celica, possibly badged Celica Sport, and confirmed it will feature four-wheel drive while considering a 2.0‑litre hybrid powertrain. Autocar reports Toyota and Gazoo Racing are exploring the larger displacement because a 1.6‑litre unit cannot meet emissions.
Gazoo Racing marketing manager Mikio Hayashi said Toyota is weighing standard versus plug‑in hybrid formats and is continuing engine development. The new system is expected to use a lighter turbocharged four‑cylinder with a shorter stroke, and reports suggest tuned variants could exceed 600bhp and be used across GR models.
