The blast reportedly blew the Pacifica's metal roof off, shattered all windows and doors, and scattered parts more than 100 feet, and neighbors said it shook nearby homes; Alan Caramella, a nearby homeowner, said he saw the driver sitting on a curb with burns. Investigators said they believe cold temperatures and rolled-up windows allowed leaked propane to accumulate and that the driver may have ignited the gas while attempting to light a cigarette, and police have assigned a major crimes detective while the investigation continues.
AmeriGas, cited in coverage, recommends never keeping a filled propane cylinder in a hot vehicle, transporting cylinders upright and secured in a well-ventilated area, and sealing cylinders with a plug when required.
