EPA Signals Position on Engine Stop-Start as Acura ADX Test Shows Limited Benefit

The Environmental Protection Agency has articulated its position on automatic engine stop-start systems after driver complaints, while a yearlong review of the 2025 Acura ADX found mixed real-world benefits from the feature.

In a hands-on test, disabling ESS in the 2025 Acura ADX for several weeks produced inconclusive changes to cumulative fuel economy, with daily driving variables such as city versus highway miles, weather and payload complicating measurement.

Stop-start systems exist to curb needless idling; the U.S. Department of Energy estimates personal-vehicle idling wastes about 3 billion gallons of fuel and produces roughly 30 million tons of CO₂ annually, but some implementations can be rough and prompt driver annoyance. Automakers added ESS in response to regulatory pressure to reduce consumption and emissions, and the Environmental Protection Agency has responded to user concerns by making its position on the technology clear.
