FAA Launches Gamer-Focused Air Traffic Control Hiring Push Ahead of April 17 Window

The Federal Aviation Administration will open an air traffic controller hiring window at midnight EDT on April 17 and has released a gamer-targeted recruitment ad to boost applications.

The advertisement features an Xbox One logo and gaming footage including League of Legends, Madden and Fortnite, uses phrases such as "You've been training for this" and "SUPERCHARGED HIRING," and notes no college degree is required and an average salary of $155,000 after three years.

The FAA says the application window will remain open until 8,000 people apply and that candidates must be younger than 31; according to the New York Times the agency added a net 300 controllers since September 2024 and has fewer than 11,000 controllers versus a target near 15,000.

The FAA and industry observers point to a continuing shortage that has produced long hours, mandatory overtime and burnout, and note controllers are unpaid during government shutdowns despite being required to work, prompting unconventional recruiting tactics.
