A car driven by Didier Arias with co-driver Héctor Núñez rolled into a spectator area during Round 2 of the FIA CODASUR South American Rally Championship's Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero in Argentina, killing one spectator and injuring two others.
Both Didier Arias and co-driver Héctor Núñez were uninjured, and the FIA said it is deeply saddened, extended condolences, thanked emergency services, and will provide full support to organisers Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA), CODASUR and local authorities in their investigation.
Organisers reported the car caught a dirt mound and barrel-rolled into the spectator area, crashing multiple times as fans atop nearby rocks jumped clear before the vehicle came to rest on its side.
The incident at Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero came amid a difficult motorsports weekend that also saw driver Juha Miettinen killed in a multi-car crash at the Nürburgring.
