Formula 1 Safety Car Driver Bernd Maylander Says He Still Feels Nervous After 500 Races

Bernd Maylander, Formula 1 safety car driver, told the F1 Beyond The Grid podcast that he still feels nervous leading the field even after surpassing 500 race appearances.

He said the adrenaline keeps him engaged and that he conducts radio and systems checks before each start to ensure readiness. He added that without the adrenaline it would be boring and he would not be a safety car driver.

Maylander said having 20, and now 22, Formula 1 cars in his rear-view mirror remains intimidating and that safety car deployments can create new situations and restarts where anything can happen.

Maylander has served as Formula 1's safety car driver since 2000 and recently passed the 500-race milestone; he said procedures and a co-driver help keep him prepared to lead the pack.
