The Federal Trade Commission has begun contacting car dealerships about potentially illegal advertising practices, sending letters to 97 dealership groups for leaving vehicle listings posted after a sale, Automotive News reports.
The letters were sent in mid-March by the director of the agency’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, the report says, and the FTC declined to give an exact timeline for removing listings, citing a desire not to offer legal advice.
Adam Crowell, chief legal and strategy officer at compliance firm KPA, said that "not taking down the listings in a timely fashion certainly could be an issue," and Automotive News noted dealers sometimes keep ads up to attract walk-in customers or steer them to other vehicles. Automotive News reported that violations could carry fines up to $50,000 per infraction, and Car and Driver contacted the Federal Trade Commission for comment but has not heard back.
