Gasly Backs Tweaks to 2026 F1 Rules While Defending Driver Influence

Alpine driver Pierre Gasly said he supports adjustments to the 2026 Formula 1 regulations and qualifying format while rejecting claims the new energy-focused rules have eliminated driver influence, with a review scheduled next week.

The 2026 regulations place heavy emphasis on electric energy management, requiring lift-and-coast and "super clip" charging in qualifying, which drivers say has curtailed flat‑out cornering and altered qualifying strategy; Japan's accident involving Oliver Bearman also highlighted closing-speed safety concerns.

Gasly said he feels there is "a bit too much negativity" around the new rules, acknowledged shared concerns about battery management, and expressed confidence that the planned review will seek improvements for the sport.

Alpine's competitiveness has improved after switching to Mercedes power units and an early focus on 2026 development; Gasly scored a point in Australia, finished sixth in Shanghai from seventh on the grid, and held seventh on the grid in Japan.
