Geely I-HEV Achieves 48.4% Thermal Efficiency; Guinness Verifies 105 MPG

Geely's new i-HEV system achieved 48.4% thermal efficiency, and Guinness World Records independently verified the figure and a combined fuel-economy rating of 105 miles per gallon, according to a Car News China report.

Geely says the i-HEV uses AI-based algorithms to more precisely manage energy and that the 48.4 percent efficiency can be achieved across its i-HEV range, whether a vehicle is equipped with a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter internal-combustion engine.

The result exceeds prior top production-engine thermal-efficiency levels around 42 percent — exemplified by Nissan's e-Power and Toyota's Dynamic Force systems — and approaches Formula 1 engine efficiency above 50 percent. Higher thermal efficiency typically yields better fuel economy and more usable power because more of the fuel's energy is converted to work.
