Georgia Suspends Gas Tax for 60 Days; AG Warns Stations Must Pass Savings

Georgia suspended its state gas tax for 60 days, cutting roughly $0.33 per gallon, and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said he will investigate stations that do not pass the savings to consumers.

Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported many gas station owners kept retail prices steady rather than lowering them to reflect the suspension, and Georgia residents filed about 25 complaints over 12 days. Carr commended Governor Brian Kemp and the legislature for the measure and said violations would be reviewed under the state’s Fair Business Practices Act, with prosecution if warranted.

The suspension is expected to cost roughly $400 million and create a near–half‑billion‑dollar shortfall in Georgia’s transportation budget, raising questions about potential impacts on road maintenance and projects.
