The Chevrolet Volt was a pioneering but ultimately unsuccessful plug-in hybrid project for General Motors that required substantial investment and struggled with early lithium-ion battery, production and post‑2008 bankruptcy obstacles.

The Volt concept, driven by Bob Lutz and Jon Lauckner to outdo the Toyota Prius, featured a T-shaped 16 kilowatt battery under the rear seat nominally good for 80 miles but intended to be used at 8 kilowatts for about 40 miles, with a 1.4‑litre engine-generator extending range to roughly 300 miles and yielding an equivalent of about 150 mpg on a 60‑mile trip.
