How wheel alignment and camber influence tyre wear

Garages routinely offer wheel alignment checks when fitting new tyres to prevent premature, uneven wear. Tyres often show tell-tale symptoms—such as excess wear on an inside or outside edge—that indicate alignment or suspension issues; spotting these early avoids more costly replacements. Potholes and worn suspension components increase the likelihood of alignment faults.

Camber is the angle of the wheel when viewed from the front or rear. Excessive negative camber (top of the wheel leaning inward) produces heavy inside-edge wear and is common in motorsport setups; on road cars it typically indicates worn bushes or bearings, especially on rear multi-link or trailing-arm suspensions, whereas most road cars run near-neutral camber.
