Hyundai Weighs Powertrain Choices and Rear-Seat Comfort for New Midsize Body-On-Frame Pickup

Hyundai is developing a body-on-frame midsize pickup and is evaluating hybrid, extended-range electric, internal-combustion and battery-electric powertrains while prioritizing rear-seat comfort and efficiency, Olabisi Boyle, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of product planning and mobility solutions, said at the New York International Auto Show.

Boyle said Hyundai learned from the Santa Cruz and consumer feedback that buyers want interior comfort in all rows rather than just front-row styling or capability.

She said the company is exploring HEV, EREV, ICE and EV options without having decided which will be offered, weighing trade-offs like towing capability versus fuel economy.

Boyle also identified advanced driver assistance systems and interior user interfaces as areas Hyundai can improve, noting that repeated functions should remain physical knobs and the brand aims to optimize features to compete with segment leaders.
