Hyundai’s Boulder Concept Previews US-Focused Body-On-Frame Off-Road Platform

Hyundai has revealed the Boulder concept, a bluff 4×4 built on a new body-on-frame platform that previews a US-focused mid-size pickup and tougher off-road models planned within the next four years.

The Boulder was designed by Hyundai’s North American studio and includes aggressive approach, departure and breakover angles, chunky buttons and dials, fold-out picnic tables, a double-hinged tailgate with a rear window that lowers, and a guidance system described as a "digital spotter"; SangYup Lee, design boss, called it "a four-wheeled love letter" to off-road life.

Hyundai said the platform will prioritize off-roading, towing and load-lugging and will be built in the US using US-produced steel, while the Boulder itself is not expected to reach production and the models are not anticipated for the UK; Randy Parker, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, said the concept signals their approach to the segment.
