Infiniti unveiled the 2027 QX65 wearing Sunfire Red, a new exterior color that incorporates gold-coated glass flecks across the crossover’s finish.
Sunfire Red is applied in a three-stage process: a red base coat, a transparent midcoat carrying the gold-coated microscopic glass flakes, and a protective clear coat, and Infiniti says each QX65 requires about two gallons of paint.
Infiniti says the gold bonds to microscopic glass flakes, and the paint supplier uses armored trucks and extra inventory monitoring during manufacture to secure the gold.
Motor1 noted the color recalls the 2015 Nissan GT-R Regal Red, which also used gold, and raised questions about potential added cost as Nissan and Infiniti reportedly pursue cost reductions.
