Jaguar Engineers Mine E‑Type and XJ Heritage to Shape X900 Electric Dynamics

Jaguar engineers led by chief engineer Jon Darlington ran a "Spirit of Jaguar" testing exercise at Jaguar Land Rover's Gaydon proving ground to define the dynamic character for the all‑electric X900 project. The team intends to deliberately engineer "Jaguarness" into a technically novel vehicle that inherits no material parts from previous Jaguars.

In 2021 the team drove heritage cars from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust—early Series 1 and Series 3 E‑Types plus Series 1 and 2 XJ saloons—to convert subjective impressions into measurable targets. They focused on visual presence, driving position, windscreen view, the character of the first 50 yards, tactile controls, and ride and handling.

Today the heritage cars were on the Gaydon apron as the team reviewed and applied those findings to X900 development. Jon Darlington and Jaguar engineers used the exercise instead of preliminary competitor benchmarking to set targets for software, chassis tuning and interior design.
