Jeep XJ Pioneer Concept Restores 1986 Cherokee with Original 2.8l V6

Jeep revealed the XJ Pioneer concept at the Easter Jeep Safari, a restored two-door 1986 Cherokee preserved with its original 2.8-liter V6 and fitted with modestly larger wheels for off-road use.

Road & Track obtained background from Chris Piscatelli, lead design manager for the Wrangler and Gladiator, who said XJ Cherokees hold strong generational attachment and personal significance for Jeep designers.

Jeep's team found a one-owner 1986 Cherokee from Nevada with about 80,000 miles and chose preservation over power upgrades, retaining the General Motors 2.8-liter V6 while refreshing the suspension and adding carbon-fiber fenders to clear bigger tires.

Jeep's press release tied the XJ Pioneer to Jeep's 85-year heritage and the Cherokee nameplate's planned 2026 return, positioning the concept as a legacy-focused showcase rather than a radical rework.
