Longtime GM Engineer Oppenheiser Retires After Leading Camaro and EV Programs

Oppenheiser is retiring from General Motors after a career that included leading the Camaro program and serving as chief engineer for GM’s electric vehicle program, which delivered the GMC Hummer full-size electric pickup.

GM President Mark Reuss tapped Oppenheiser for the EV assignment, and Oppenheiser told MotorTrend he relearned electric-drive engineering later in his career rather than step away from the company.

Under Oppenheiser’s leadership the 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ and IQL earned MotorTrend’s SUV of the Year, and he has led two teams to win top MotorTrend honors during his tenure at GM.

Oppenheiser, who was ranked No. 13 on MotorTrend’s 2026 Power List, said he will enjoy his Camaro collection in retirement and may decide later whether to remain retired.
