McLaughlin Walks Away as Penske No. 3 IndyCar Sustains Fence Impact at Barber

Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin walked away after losing control of his No. 3 Chevrolet Dallara and impacting the tire and fencing barrier during IndyCar Barber Practice 2 on Saturday.

McLaughlin ran high coming out of turn 17, misjudged the entry to turn one, dropped his right rear and slid backwards through the gravel and fence, with in-car footage showing him bracing before the impact; he later exited the medical center.

The AMR safety team freed the car and IndyCar called practice early because of damaged fence cables, while Team Penske initially attempted repairs before opting to prepare a backup No. 3 car for qualifying; Alex Palou led Practice 2 and McLaughlin had topped Practice 1.

McLaughlin told Fox Sports reporter Georgia Henneberry, "It looked a lot worse than it felt," and called the incident a mistake he must be better about as he hoped to return for qualifying.
