Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli to Focus on Race‑Start Work During F1 Spring Break

Kimi Antonelli, Formula 1 championship leader for Mercedes, will use the five-week spring break between Japan and Miami to improve his race starts.

Antonelli has lost a combined 18 positions on lap one across three grands prix and the China sprint, with issues from low battery power in Melbourne to excessive wheelspin in Japan.

He said he was "very angry" about the Suzuka start and plans simulator sessions, including new steering wheel settings, to work on starts. He will also do a GP2 test, a Pirelli tyre test at the Nürburgring on April 14–15, go‑karting and possible GT running.

Mercedes' W17 pace has allowed Antonelli to recover and win races, but team‑mate George Russell has also lost places on lap one, underscoring a start‑procedure challenge under the 2026 rules.
