TikTok user Valens (@valens650) posted a video showing a motorcyclist wearing a helmet while his female passenger rode without one, and Valens shouted at the pair to prompt the rider to give her the helmet.
The clip, viewed more than 2.3 million times, drew widespread criticism of the rider and praise for Valens from commenters who said the passenger deserved better treatment.
Helmet laws vary across the U.S.: 17 states and Washington, D.C. enforce universal helmet requirements for all riders, three states—Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire—have no helmet law, and 30 states impose partial rules.
A study of all 50 states from 1975–2004 found universal helmet laws reduced motorcyclist fatalities by about 11%, and after Texas repealed its universal law helmet use fell 30% while fatalities rose 21%.
