Netherlands’ AI Parking Cameras Flag Millions of Cars, Dutch Authority Data Shows

The Netherlands is using AI-equipped camera cars to detect illegal parking and issue fines, with the Dutch Data Protection Authority estimating 250–375 million vehicle scans could produce 3–5 million tickets annually.

NL Times reported that about 500,000 ticketed vehicles were actually parked legally—about a 10% minimum error rate—and that 40–62% of appeals have resulted in fines being overturned.

License plate recognition performs well, but single images from passing camera cars often miss context such as displayed disabled parking permits, a group reportedly overrepresented among unjustified tickets. Although Dutch parking enforcement officers review the photos, the images cannot capture on-the-spot context or discretionary judgment available to human officers.
