At the 2026 New York Auto Show, Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer for Nissan North America, told The Drive that Nissan will lean into heritage-based special editions, refresh the 2027 Nissan Z and shift it to a build-to-order model including a Nismo manual.
Pandikuthira said many buyers are older enthusiasts who lusted after the Z when they were younger and are buying the car as a trophy or retirement vehicle, and that the Nismo performance version is selling extremely well.
Pandikuthira said Nissan will "animate" the Z with special versions over the next three years rather than abandon the model. The 2027 Z adds a mild front-bumper refresh and a manual transmission for the Nismo, and buyers can expect three- to six-month wait times for bespoke builds as the model moves to a build-to-order cadence.
