Orion Spacecraft Toilet Fan Jams, NASA Uses Collapsible Contingency Urinals

NASA's Orion Waste Management System experienced a jammed toilet fan about an hour into the mission, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch had access to contingency urine collection devices while ground teams worked on repairs.

NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan said, "The toilet fan is reported to be jammed," and that ground teams were developing instructions to access and clear the fan area to revive the system. Without a working fan, the system cannot intake liquid waste though solid waste remains manageable.

Mission control told the crew that Collapsed Contingency Urinals (CCUs) were available in Alpha 2 as a backup. The CCUs are compact, collapsible, passive urine collection devices developed for spacecraft use with local storage and volumetric measurement.
