The Phoenix Police Department removed non-U.S. license plates from undercover vehicles and opened a department-wide review after a TikTok video showed two undercover Chevrolet Silverados displaying Mexican license plates.
Police Chief Matt Giordano ordered the plates' removal, AZ Family reported, and the department said the Maryvale-Estrella Mountain Precinct had conducted a traffic stop where the non-U.S. plates created uncertainty about who was conducting the stop.
Mexico's top diplomat in Arizona said the Mexican consulate was not made aware of the practice, and Titanswire reported Phoenix police officials told consulate staff the plates were taken from impounded vehicles confiscated from Mexican nationals.
The Phoenix Police Department said it will require officers to clearly identify themselves in public interactions except when undercover safety is at risk, avoid full-face coverings during routine enforcement, and wear uniforms or markings that identify them; a department-wide review is underway.
